Red Bull Ajo Motorsport rider Marc Márquez stretched his lead at the top of the 125cc World Championship as he won in Australia – his third race win in a row.
The Spaniard raced into the history books on Saturday with his 11th pole of the season and he was at it again today with his ninth race win of 2010, which equalled Jorge Martinez’s Spanish record for wins in a season. Márquez’s lead at the top of the championship is now 12 points with just two rounds to go.
'They’ll be two very important races, the most important in my life so far and we’ll have to keep the same mentality' – Márquez
Rain over the weekend had rendered conditions on Phillip Island difficult for the riders but the race proved to be comfortable for Márquez as he finished over six seconds clear of Pol Espargaro. The only scare for the 17-year-old came late on as he clipped a backmarker.
“It’s been a complicated and very tough weekend because every time we went out on the track, the conditions changed a lot and that sometimes makes it difficult to find a good set-up and gain confidence on the bike,” Márquez said. “In the end, we’ve had a good weekend, especially in the race, which has been very good for the championship and for the team.
“It was very difficult to break away here and even more so with this wind and for that reason I’m very happy. It is an important win, but at the same time, we have to keep focused on the last two races. They’ll be two very important races, the most important in my life so far and we’ll have to keep the same mentality.”
Meanwhile in the MotoGP class, Andrea Dovizioso lost ground in the race for third in the championship as he failed to complete the Australian Grand Prix.
The Italian rider suffered technical problems early on which forced him to retire. Dovizioso is now 26 points behind Casey Stoner – who won his home event for the fourth consecutive year.
Behind Stoner 2010 world champion Jorge Lorenzo came a comfortable second. Valentino Rossi won a close battle with Nicky Hayden for the final podium place.
