A close result in the Hamburg Triathlon left early-season ITU World Championship pacesetter Alexander Bryukhankov just a single point off top spot in the series in Germany.

Though he only finished a minute and six seconds behind the winner Javier Gomez of Spain, so close together were the athletes that Alexander came ninth in a time of 1h 44m 13s, meaning that German Jan Frodeno leapfrogged him into first place in the title standings with his own second place. It couldn’t be closer, however, with the Russian a single point behind his rival, with their respective totals 2,153pts and 2,152pts after four rounds.

Just 15 seconds covered 10th place Joao Silva of Portugal and fourth-placed Swiss Sven Riederer, a tight result considering the variables across the three disciplines of swimming, cycling and running, plus two transitions, in a 74-minute race.

With the standings so close, Alexander has an excellent chance of regaining the initiative in just a week’s time, as the series moves to the UK and the triathletes get the opportunity to test the route for the London Olympic Games in 2012.

ITU World Championship title standings
1. Jan Frodeno (GER) 2,153pts
2. Alexander Bryukhankov (RUS) 2,152
3. Javier Gomez (SPA) 1,772
