Timo Scheider was born in Lahnstein, Germany, though he now lives in Austria. After starting to kart aged 11 in 1989, he won his first kart race at the Winter Cup in Kerpen aged 14 in 1992 and was German Junior Karting Cup champion in 1994. In 1997 he finished second to Nick Heidfeld in German F3 with three victories, and then in 2000 he debuted in DTM for Opel. After five seasons, Timo took a ‘sabbatical’ to race in A1GP and GTs, plus the Spa 24-Hour race and Nürburgring 24 Hours (both of which he won), returning to DTM in 2006 with Audi. He took his first pole and win at Oschersleben in 2008, setting a trend – he won two more races that season, both from pole position, to take the 2008 DTM crown. In 2009, he defended his title with two victories – again both from pole! He’s not quite hit those heights again, finishing fourth overall last year and this, but makes a welcome debut for Team Germany alongside namesake from F1 Timo Glock.

Fast facts:

  • Timo lists cooking, Supermoto, karting, snowboarding and ‘mental training’ among his outside interests
  • Timo has a vocational qualification in Economics, in case as a double DTM series champion he ever finds himself out of work…
  • Last year, Timo set up his own karting outfit, ‘Team Scheider’, to find and nurture fresh motorsports talent.

Best quote:
“I know only too well that DTM and I have gone through all the highs but also many more lows. So I know how careful you must be…”
Timo shrewdly sounded a note of caution after his 2009 double title ahead of a season that turned out to be less successful.
