Have you ever wanted to jump higher than a kangaroo? A trampoline's all well and good but unfortunately not very portable. The pogostick is the future. It's a T-shaped product that comes with an integrated spring which allows you to jump up to two metres in the air. In 10 to 30 minutes you can learn to handle it, but don’t be too hasty and think you can all of a sudden freestyle!
Requirements
Safety first. To use the pogostick you definitely need protectors for your knees and elbows and a helmet. Sporty shoes are necessary to be more stable on the stick. The rider should have a minimum weight of 40-45 kg and maximum weight of 125 kg.
How to use it
First you have to pump the stick up, depending on your weight. You can use a bicycle pump for that. Take the stick and try to place it vertical on the ground. If you have your feet on the footrest, try to angle your knees, and jump up and down. Each time you should try to bounce higher and higher, up to two metres.
Some tricks
The Table Top – bounce and kick the stick up to the side
Bar Spin – lift your feet off the stick and twist the handles to the side and back again as the feet land back on the stick
No hands – hands come off the handle bars as the feet kick the stick to the side
Peg grind – jump up and land with the underside of the peg foot supports on the straight edge of a step and slide down
Saran Wrap – jump high up off the stick, keeping one hand on the grips and use your legs to make a 'scissor kick'
Leapfrog – one person holds one stick and the other jumps with theirs to the other one and carries on jumping
Peg grab – jump up, kick the stick out to the side and grab the peg
Flip Dismount – jump up and somersault off!
Technical specifications
The pogostick weighs two to six kilos, light as a feather! It’s made of steel and aluminium. The plastic plates and elastic bands allow maximum lift. The handle and footrest is welded. It's length is about 1.4 metres.
The Pioneer
The German George Hansburg invented the first pogostick in 1919. The new and updated version of the pogostick with an air pump was created by Brian and Bruce Spencer. Since then, it’s become more and more famous. In the US, the pogostick is one of the trendiest sports and world championships are already taking place.
