Fresh from his triumph in Abu Dhabi at the weekend, Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel heads to Beijing to renew rivalries with Jenson Button and to take on the likes of Michael Schumacher and David Coulthard in the Race of Champions 2009.
The Race of Champions brings together the world’s best racers from both two and four-wheel disciplines, puts them in identical vehicles and tries to answer the question: ‘Who is the world’s fastest driver?’
Now in its 21st year, the event has been held in London for the past two years, but switches to Beijing’s spectacular ‘Bird’s Nest’ stadium for 2009.
The drivers will be fighting it out for two trophies – the Champion of Champions individual trophy and the Nations Cup – a team event involving two drivers from eight different nations plus a team of All Stars.
Red Bull’s Sebastien Loeb won the Champion of Champions trophy for the third time in 2008, but in the absence of Loeb it could be the turn of Formula One championship runner-up Vettel, who by his own admission will ‘be trying to kick [Jenson Button’s] ass!’
In addition to Vettel, Coulthard, Schumacher and Button, among the many stars of motor sport taking on the challenge are: Travis Pastrana, Mick Doohan, Marcus Gronholm, and Mattias Ekström.
The races will be run on a specially constructed asphalt circuit that features a dual track, featuring a crossover point, which ensures that the drivers complete the same distance but on separate tracks, starting and finishing side-by-side.
The races take place on November 2, 3 and 4 when we will find out if Vettel can complete a memorable few days by emulating fellow Red Bull driver, Loeb, by being crowned the Champion of Champions.
