Hong Kong BMX star Steven Wong lit up last month’s East Asian Games by taking gold on his 2010 Formula bike on home turf.

Wong completed the course in 30.181 seconds, with Masahiro Sampei of Japan and Zhao Zhiyang of China in the silver and bronze medal positions.

Wong, Belgian-born but whose father is from Hong Kong, is a rising star in South China, and Hong Kong in particular, with labels like ‘young and stylish sporting icon’ and ‘teen idol’ now being attached to the 21-year-old in the local media.

'My main goal will be the London Olympics' – Steven Wong

"I have worked really hard for my goals and everything went well today, and I am really happy to win," said Wong, who also claimed his fourth consecutive Asian BMX Championship gold on the same course in November, despite riding with a serious ankle injury sustained when he crashed in October’s Chinese National Games.

"It's cool to win two gold medals in a row," he added.

This year, as well as aiming for another gold at the Asian Games, which take place from 12–27 November in Guangzhou, China, Wong will be focusing on the collection of Olympic points, with the 2012 Games in London in mind.

"My main goal will be the London Olympics, so this year will be quite important," said Wong.
