Philip Koster Philip Koster: triumphant

The 12 pro windsurfers who were left to battle it out on day three of the KIA @coldhawaii PWA World Cup in Klitmoller, Denmark were treated to almost perfect conditions yesterday.

With the winds blowing strong and the waves breaking cleaner than any day previously, the judges chose to keep the format the same, with two jumps and two rides counting towards each surfer's finaly tally. But in spite of the terrific conditions it was Red Bull's Philip Koster who dominated once again. And with three event wins he walked away as 2011's World Wave Champion.

Impressive French surfer Thomas Traversa was tearing through the pack on day three until he came up aginst Koster. For the first half of the heat the Frenchman made the German look rather ordinary as he threw an array of big backside aerials and aggressive frontside hits. But Koster stormed into the lead with a perfect bolt upright double forward loop and a huge backloop. Next up was 2010 World Champion Victor Fernandez Lopez.

Suffice to say, Koster had the heat of his life. He busted out a double forward loop, a backside 360 and reverse all on one wave. He was awarded the title of 2011 World Champion having won the heat with a 5-0 decision from the judges.

But the day wasn't over for Koster. He still had to face Ricardo Campello twice more to win first place on the day. But with the adrenaline pumping through his veins, Koster wowed the crowds with his wave rides and was awarded twelve points for one that included a one-handed goiter and a taka. Then it was time for the day's concluding super final and a rematch with Campello. Koster managed the impossible and upped his game even more and after four mind-blowing heats he was awarded both the world title and the event win.

Koster had this to say afterwards: 'I feel amazing, I can’t believe it, it’s a dream come true. I am so happy I have won another event and now I am the world champion. I can’t imagine a better day, I am so stoked!'

As well as all of that, Koster is set to appear in a full-length windsurfing movie that focuses on him and five other top pros. The film, called Minds Wide Open and ready for release, shows Koster on top form.

The film is the baby of producer and top freestyle pro Andre Paskowski, who wanted to capture 'the essence of our beautiful, 100 per cent natural sport. We want to show the world how radical it is and really get people dreaming about the possibilities that modern windsurfing brings.'
