It’s all change within Team Kamaz for the 2012 Dakar Rally with the retirement of two of the greatest truckers the race has ever known. Vladimir Chagin and Firdaus Kabirov have won the Truck Class of the Dakar in nine of the previous 11 editions of the race.
The management of Team Kamaz have now handed the awesome responsibility of keeping their trucks at the top of the leaderboard to the next generation of drivers. Among this new breed is Andrey Karginov, who will be behind the wheel for his first Dakar in 2012.
Andrey’s previous Dakar experience came as a mechanic in Ilgizar Mardeev’s crew that finished fifth in 2010. Andrey’s driving experience may not be extensive, but his podium finish at the 2011 Silk Way Rally marked him out as one to watch in the near future.
Alongside Andrey in his Kamaz cabin will be co-pilot Andrey Mokeev and mechanic Igor Devyatkin.
Fast Fact: Mechanic Igor Devyatkin is a massive fan of samba music and likes to play along to his favourite tunes on the trumpet. He is so skilled with his instrument, he was even invited to study music at the prestigious Sofia Conservatory. Expect Igor to take control of the truck’s stereo while the crew are navigating through the desert!
Best quote: “We have made a number of innovations this year, not least of which is the young drivers we will introduce to the race. It’s too early to suggest how much of a risk this is, but we are confident that our young crews are well prepared to compete. I think our move will create a more interesting Dakar for us and our rivals.” Semen Yakubov, Kamaz team leader
