2011 champion Arttu Pihlainen, injured on Saturday when he crashed into the boards while training ahead of the 2012/13 Ice Cross Downhill World Championship season opener in Niagara Falls, has decided to follow doctor's advice and pull out of the race.
Pihlainen, who normally has good luck in Canada and has won four of the last five Quebec City races, injured his back in a high-speed training crash on Saturday morning on the track set up next to the famous Niagara Falls. Pihlainen had also hurt his rear in the Team Challenge competition on Friday evening.
The absence of one of ice cross downhill's top athletes makes Saturday's final competition even more wide open. Stay tuned to redbullcrashedice.com for all of the action from Niagara Falls.
