Skiing's golden girl, Lindsey Vonn, was another big winner in 2011...
The achievements
After experiencing Olympic success in 2010 in Vancouver, Lindsey continued her near dominance of ladies alpine skiing by winning the overall World Cups in the Downhill, Combined and Super-G disciplines. She lost out on the overall World Cup crown by just three points to her friend, Maria Reisch and was a silver medal winner In the Downhill at the 2011 World Championships in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany. Lindsey's 2012 World Cup season has begun in excellent fashion as well, with substantial leads in the overall standings, thanks to an impressive five victories in her opening nine races of the season.
The big event
Lindsey came agonisingly close to pulling off perhaps her greatest ever World Cup Overall win in March of this year when after reducing Maria Reisch's big lead, the title came down to the final event of the season in Lenzerheide, Switzerland. Lindsey had taken the overall lead, but poor weather conditions meant that the Giant Slalom and Super-G were cancelled and that Lindsey's weakest discipline, the Slalom would be the decider. Maria's fourth place was enough for her to win by the narrowest of margins.

Best quote of the year
“I'm getting stronger every year, more agile. I feel like there's still a lot of room for improvement. My GS is by far the best it's ever been and I know I can continue to improve."
Bad news for all of the other female skiers then, as Lindsey clearly thinks she can get even better!

What’s next in 2012?
Hopefully, Lindsey will be reclaiming her overall World Cup title if results and performances stay at the high level shown at the start of the 2012 season. With no Winter Olympics or World Championships in 2012, Lindsey will be doubly focussed on grabbing her overall title back.
