Carissa Moore October 11 Chris Baldwin/Red Bull Content Pool

World surfing champion Carissa Moore's achievements this year have been recognised by the National Geographic Society, who have shortlisted her for the 2012 People's Choice Award.

The Adventurer of the Year accolade has been running for seven years now and rewards extraordinary achievement in exploration, conservation, and adventure sports.

In addition to Red Bull backed Moore, fellow athletes from the Red Bull stable nominated for the accolade are snowboarder, Travis Rice and trials rider Danny MacAskill.

Moore's outstanding year in 2011 saw her become the youngest ASP Women's World Champion in history at the age of 18 and she went on to become the first woman in the modern era to compete in the men's Triple Crown of Surfing.

Carissa finished fourth in the opening event in Haleiwa and is currently competing in the Vans World Cup of Surfing in Honolulu, after the women's events in Hawaii were cancelled due to lack of sponsorship investment.

As well as the three Red Bull athletes, the other adventurers in with a chance of the People's Choice Award are adventurer, Alastair Humphreys, climber Cory Richards, hiker Jennifer Pharr Davis, kayakers Jon Turk and Erik Boomer, mountaineer Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner, skier Nick Waggoner, and from The Ultimate Descent: Sano Babu Sunuwar, and Lakpa Tsheri Sherpa.
