Alison Cerutti won gold at the FIVB World Beach Volleyball Championships at the Foro Italico in Rome, Italy at the weekend, while Julius Brink and Jonas Reckermann earned bronze medals.

Cerutti, along with partner Emanuel Rego, defeated Rego's former partner Ricardo Santos and Marcio Araujo by a score of 21-16, 21-15 to earn the gold medal, which compliments the silver medal that Cerutti won in 2009 with Harley Marques Silva.

The 25-year-old Brazilian was voted 'player of the tournament' for his excellent displays at the net and Rego paid tribute to his partner after the final.

"This is my third championship and I want to dedicate it to my friend,” Rego said.

“When you play volleyball you need some kind of energy, but when you play beach volleyball you need even more and more energy.

“Here you play eight matches and sometimes when you get old you think eight matches are too much. But with him you think, ‘one more, one more game,’ and he gives me that type of energy that helps you improvise."

Defending champions, Brink and Reckermann had to be content with bronze this time after losing to Cerutti and Rego in the semi finals, but after defeating Latvia's Martins Plavins and Janis Smedins in the play-off, they were delighted to have won a medal.

"Playing the World Championships is always something special,” Reckermann said. “We lost the semi final and normally that might have been more disappointing, but after the semi final we said, ‘one more win and we will have a medal’.

“We won gold two years ago, but this doesn’t feel worse, we are so happy.”
