Cyril Despres looks forward to racing Le Trèfle Lozérien and looks back on his trip to the Cannes Film Festival while he enjoys a week back home in France.

I’m right in the middle of France at the moment for one of my favourite races, Le Trèfle Lozérien. The place has got really famous for Enduro since they started racing here about 30 years ago. Six hundred riders will start the race today as the event goes from strength to strength.

Le Trèfle Lozérien is the only opportunity I will have this year to race in France so I’m very happy to be taking part. It’s an interesting race because the special stages are very short. This means that in the days before the race starts you have the opportunity to walk through each special stage to see what hazards are out there. You check for jumps and other potential dangers as well as the spots where you can go for flat out speed

I arrived three days before the race and together with Stephane Peterhansel we have been checking out each special stage. This is the race that really made Stephane famous before he won all those different Dakar Rallies. Now Stephane drives a car at the Dakar but he still always comes back to Le Trèfle Lozérien to race on a bike.

I will have to see how fast I go over the next few days, I have been training hard to recover from my injury but we’ll just have to wait and see how I get on. I’ll be on a slightly small bike than I’m used to for this race, a KTM 350 Enduro.

I think racing Le Trèfle Lozérien will be a fun way to end what started as quite a surreal week back in France. Standing on the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival was very different from racing in a muddy field. I went to Cannes to officially launch my book, Dakar X4.

The change of scene was nice and it’s always interesting to meet different types of people. I know my girlfriend enjoyed the chance to get dressed up like a movie star. I got into the spirit as well and threw on a smoking jacket and bowtie.

I went along to watch a movie in one of the screening rooms and ended up watching Madagascar 3. They have some very serious films at Cannes so at least this was one I was able to understand! We will have to show it to our little daughter when we get home.

The trip to Cannes was a great way to let the world know about my Dakar X4 book. I hope the extra publicity will help us to sell more copies and raise money for my school in Senegal.
