The label Soul Jazz Records started in the 1990s, releasing compilation albums of predominantly black music, including reggae, soul, ska, dub and jazz. Here, we serve up two radio shows of the label’s truly selective sound system.

The Soul Jazz Sound System is the DJ arm of British record imprint Soul Jazz Records. Soul Jazz started 20 years ago and is now a record company, book publisher and retail store (Sounds Of The Universe). A large number of their releases have been compilations of works from the influential Studio One record label, based in Kingston, Jamaica.

The musical output is a generous mixture of reggae, punk, Latin, disco, dubstep, Brazilian, jungle and more. Recent artists recording on the label include Digital Mystikz (dubstep), Subway (electro), Tetine (baile funk) and the legendary ESG.

The label has since expanded its style, and has released further compilations of post-punk, electronica and world music, alongside a number of artist studio albums and singles. The most notable album releases on the label include Studio One gem collection 100% Dynamite!, excursions into Batucada Capoeira, the Drums of Cuba, New Orleans Funk, Studio One Ska, a history of classic N.Y.C. hip hop with Big Apple Rappin', the Box of Dub - Dubstep and Future Dub, the indispensably happy Jackie Mittoo – The Keyboard King At Studio One and reggae versions of 70s and 80s dancefloor diamonds with Hustle! Reggae Disco.

The DJ arm of the label has been going for nearly as long as the label itself. As well as a steady stream of club nights over the years - 100% Dynamite (currently celebrating its ten year anniversary), 1977, Nu Yorica, Acid and Saturday Night Fish Fry, the Soul Jazz Sound System regularly tours the world with residencies in London, Paris, Edinburgh and recent tours of Australia, Spain, France and more.
