Austrian ski jumper Gregor Schlierenzauer has won the prestigious Four Hills tournament after finishing third in the final leg of the competition in Bischofshofen on Friday.

The five-time world champion was beaten on the day by compatriot and defending champion Thomas Morgenstern, who leapt 135m for first place. Anders Bardal of Norway came second with a jump of the same distance as Morgenstern, but was docked points for technique.

Schlierenzauer’s third place was enough to seal the overall title though after he had won the opening events in Oberstdorf and Garmish Partenkirchen.

'I have fought so long for this. Now my dream has been fulfilled. It is indescribable.'

The second round of jumps were cancelled due to heavy snowfall, meaning the first round of results counted as the final scores.

Schlierenzauer’s closest challenger coming into the final event, Andreas Kofler had a poor first round finishing 27th to drop into third in the Four Hills behind Morgenstern.

Schlierenzauer is the fourth Austrian in a row to win the tournament, and he had two other countrymen on the podium with him at the end of the event. Morgenstern, who was last year's Four Hills champ, won the individual event in Bischofshofen, and was second overall, while Andreas Kofler was third.

Kofler is top of the overall World Cup standings with 772 points, 56 ahead of second-placed Schlierenzauer, while Morgenstern is fourth with 576 points.
