The big guns of the ASP World Tour stamped their authority on the Hurley Pro at Trestles, California by reaching the latter stages as the competition heads to the business end this week.
Ten times world champion, Kelly Slater, along with fellow top ranked surfers, Owen Wright, Joel Parkinson, Adriano De Souza, Mick Fanning, and Taj Burrow all moved through to Round 5 or the Quarter Finals.
Also through to Round 5 is Julian Wilson (pictured above), who scored a near-perfect score of 9.80 out of ten in his heat against Parkinson and Fanning.
De Souza, who has recently relocated to California from his native Brazil, advanced directly to the Quarter Finals by defeating Burrow and Jeremy Flores and after the heat he explained the reasons behind the move.
"I’m one of the guys that surfs Trestles more than the top 32,” De Souza said. “I came to the U.S. to improve my surfing and English with my family and friends and that’s why I’m down here and surfing this wave a lot.
"I’m happy to make that heat. It was really important to me with Taj and Jeremy, especially Jeremy. He’s the reason I’m in the top 5. We competed a lot a few years back and he pushed me. Taj too, he’s incredible in any conditions out there."
