Dani Pedrosa, Andrea Dovizioso, Ben Spies along with Scott Redding from Moto2 and Marc Márquez from 125cc gets schooled on the hardwood floor by former Indiana Pacers center Rik Smits.
The most prestigious motorcycle road racing series in the world stops by Indianapolis this weekend for the Red Bull Indianapolis GP. The MotoGP riders plan on racing through a 16-turn, 2.621-mile road circuit at the famous Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
All three World Championship classes will compete at the event: MotoGP, Moto2, and 125cc. Unlike oval events at IMS, riders compete in the Red Bull Indianapolis GP rain or shine.
The Red Bull Indianapolis GP is scheduled for Sunday, Aug. 29 but before some of the riders put in their suits and strap on their helmets, they were invited to play basketball with former Indiana Pacers star Rik Smits. Standing at 7'4" Rik is currently retired, but he's known to love and collect vintage motorcycles, which is probably why he decided to take on the MotoGP riders.
Among the riders who played with Rik include Dani Pedrosa, Andrea Dovizioso, and Ben Spies. They arrived on Thursday at the Conseco Fieldhouse, where the Pacers play, and received lessons on how to shoot, rebound, and defend.
“The standard is not so high here so I look good!” said Andrea. “The stadium looks much bigger on the television so when you come here and see a tall guy like Rik Smits you can imagine how tough it is when they’re competing on the court.”
