The Red Bull Music Academy Porto Hub has kicked off in fine style with the special appearance of a Portuguese legend, a lecture from a hip-hop trailblazer and a dancefloor-filling musical showcase...

After an energetic warm-up phase, the first guests have arrived and begun exploring the spaces and technology of the Red Bull Music Academy Porto Hub.

As a special early treat, legendary Portuguese musician Eurico Cebolo sneaked in and talked with fellow participants about music, creativity and life in general. It was a moment that perfectly encapsulated the Academy's reason for being, as three generations of musicians from various music styles sat and talked about their shared passions. Soon after, we were led to the Lecture Room to listen to an eccentrically dressed Om'Mas Keith from Los Angeles-based hip-hop collective Sa-Ra Creative Partners.

We started off by listening to Sa-Ra, before Om'Mas proceeded to explain the role music has played in his life and how he has always been involved in it. We listened to some of the most remarkable themes from his teen years and he gave us a short overview of his career before stepping forward to the keyboard to finish it off with a solo song which emphasized the importance of having quality hardware in music.

Afterwards, the collected musicians gathered around the "machine table" to try out the countless beats and basslines that the MPC's had to offer in a free jam. This show of collective improvisation served as an appetizer for what would happen next.

One of Porto's most famous bars, Passos Manuel, played host to the Reactable showcase, performed by DJ Carlazz. During a 30-minute set, the manipulated synthetic sounds created by this interactive table filled the venue with rhythmic short-circuits and a melodic overload that got the crowd going wild. Om'Mas Keith then kept the dancefloor going for the rest of the night with his good vibes.

Next up on the academy schedule, Tozé Brito and Appleblim will do the honours in the Lecture Room and, later, the party will be at Plano B, where Appleblim, Hit+Run, Oker and Buck Skins will bring the noise.
