Red Bull Playstreets has a new star, and so do the streets of the mountain resort of Bad Gastein (quite literally), as Swiss freeskier Elias Ambühl wrote his name in the competition’s history books with his victory on Saturday night.
Ambühl’s prize included his name being added to the Red Bull Walk of Fame beside the track which runs through the streets and over the buildings of the historic Austrian spa town as part of his prize for finishing ahead of Finland’s Anti Ollila and New Zealander Jossi Wells.
The only cloud on the horizon had been the lack of clouds as unseasonally warm weather meant 500 truck loads of snow had to be brought into the town centre to help build the course.
"My second time in Bad Gastein,” said Ambühl, who also took home a Suzuki motocross bike. “I am so stoked to win in front of this crowd."
The Swiss performed solidly all day to claim the title under the watching eyes of 10,000 fans and freeskiing legend Jon Olsson, who provided online commentary and also took the opportunity to put in a few training runs on the alpine resort’s giant slalom course.
