The first stop of the 2011 Subaru Freeskiing World Tour (FWT) hits the Argentinian resort of Las Leñas this week in the guise of Red Bull Powder Disorder.
The curtain-raising event of the six-stop FWT…
… has been given the catchy title Red Bull Powder Disorder as chaos comes to the Andes mountain range. Bryan Barlow, competition director of the tour, has been flying high ever since the trip to Las Leñas was confirmed. “It’s a true fit for the tour as the mountains are truly unrivalled in the world, allowing the athletes to showcase their progressive big mountain freesking skills.”
The world’s 32 elite freestyle and freeride skiers…
… will be hitting the slopes and hoping to clock up some precious tour points early in the season. The staff at the Las Leñas resort are equally excited about the FWT coming to town, as Sofia Fernandez Madero explains. “The natural characteristics of our mountain and the climate favour our position as the off-piste Mecca in this region. We have everything ready to welcome the athletes participating in the event at our resort at the foot of the slopes.”
$10,000 in prize money…
… is up for grabs in Argentina as well as ranking points, so expect no-holds-barred off-piste action when the event begins on Tuesday, August 9. While celebrating its 13th year in existence the FWT is now bigger and better than ever. The longest running big mountain freeskiing tour now boasts a total prize fund of over $100,000 spread over six annual events.
Before the competition kicks off…
… the skiers will be invited to inspect the slopes at Las Leñas and plot their route down the mountain. It will be key for the competitors to map a course that allows them to express their trickery as well as maintain speed down the slope. The skiers get together on Tuesday to inspect the slopes and pick their routes ahead of the qualifying round on Wednesday. Competitors will be tested over kickers and cliffs with their mastery of the mountains scored by a team of four judges. The final run is scheduled for Thursday where the winner of Red Bull Powder Disorder will be crowned.
Richard Permin…
… is one of the most feared backcountry, freeride and freestyle skiers on the circuit. The Frenchman is already a legend at events such as Red Bull Linecatcher and Red Bull Cold Rush and will no doubt be the man to beat in Argentina.
