As we gear up for Red Bull Sea To Sky this autumn, let’s break the rock hard enduro race down to its numerical foundations…
7-9...
Between October 7 and 9 Kemer, Turkey, will be the home to one of the toughest enduro treks ever imagined. The event kicks off on the beach, goes up into the forest and ends at the top of a rocky mountain within the space of one weekend? This rare combination has already started to attract some of the starts of the hard-enduro elite, with the likes of Chris Birch, Andreas Lettenbichler and Johny Walker confirmed to attend.
2,300...
The race is composed of three parts: dunes at the beach, Single trails in the forest and rock-climbing on the mountain and it spans an altitude-delta of over 2,300 metres from sea level to mountain top. The “Beach Race” on October 8 will kick the whole event off with a mass start in typical motocross style.
8+40...
Before the riders get the chance to get into the Olympus mountain race, the Forest time trial will wind through single- trail mountain roads and forest into the mountains around Kemer. The result of this race will determines the starting line-up of the final mountain race which starts in a dry riverbed for 8 km, followed by 40 km forest section, before heading up an elevation of approximately 1,900 metres during which time the bike tyres will have contact to rock surfaces only.
2,365...
The race, which climbs 2,365 from sea level starting point to mountain-top finishing line is organised by Red Bull Romaniacs creators Xventure. "The mountains around Kemer are very promising,” says co-creator Martin “Frejn” Freinademetz of the sophomore hardcore event. “The local Enduro club is extremely motivated, the athorities are supporting enduro like other cities support football and with a long-term partner like Red Bull we expect a great future for this race."
100...
All in all, the event covers up to 100km. Luckily, riders will only have to make the journey once as they get to ride back down from the top in a handy tourist cable car.
30...
Track manager Klaus Soerensen is clearly aware of the tough nature of the race, expecting as he does only a small percentage of competitors to reach the finish line. “It is quite easy to create a tough and spectacular race here,” he says. “It is quite natural that we expect only 30% or less of the competitors to make it to the top of the mountain.” Those who will arrive within the maximum riding time will be awarded with a Red Bull Sea to Sky Gold medal.
1,900...
Those competitors who aren’t able to make it all the way to the top need not fret too much, as those who reach the tree line at an elevation of 1,900 metres will be awarded with a Silver medal. Meanwhile, those who make it through the river section and the first sections of the forest will receive a Bronze medal.
50,000...
Kemer, the South Turkish location of Red Bull Sea To Sky is a well-known tourist destination with over 500,000 hotel beds. Needless to say, there will be plenty of space for competitors to chill out and relax after their arduous challenge.
