This time we bring you news of a weekend winter wonderland…

EC Red Bull Salzburg (above) got the best possible result at the Red Bulls Salute ice hockey competition in Vienna, beating Finnish side Jokerit 3–2 in the final match, depsite at one stage being 2–0 behind. "It's an historic win,” said coach Pierre Pagé. “I'm delighted that the team were able to turn things around."

Benny Karl (pictured below) took his 13th career World Cup win in the FIS Alpine Snowboarding Parallel Giant Slalom in Telluride, just edging out fellow Austrian Andreas Promegger to win and take the lead of the championship. “It was a tough final,” Karl commented. “I really had to fight as I heard him coming.” Meanwhile in Telluride, Pierre Vaultier took the win in the first FIS Snowboard Cross event of the year.

In a weather-affected weekend of alpine skiing, there were mixed results, with Aksel Lund Svindal (pictured) eighth in the Men’s Giant Slalom event in Alta Badia, while Lindsey Vonn failed to finish in the Women’s Slalom in Courchevel.

Teenage women’s golfing sensation Alexis Thompson continued her recent fine form with victory in the Omega Dubai Ladies Masters Championship.

Gregor Schlierenzauer (pictured) was injured in a fall at Engelberg on Saturday, finishing 11th, but he fought back on Sunday with fourth place. Austrian team-mate Thomas Morgenstern was third on Saturday and fifth on Sunday.

At the Winter Dew Tour stop in Breckenridge, Iouri Podladtchikov took third place on the podium in the Snowboard Men’s Superpipe Final.

In the Women’s Snowboard Slopestyle, Enni Rukajärvi (pictured) took second place, with Sarka Pancochova third.

In the Men’s Slopestyle final, Seb Toutant (pictured) came second. Fellow Canadian Mark McMorris finished seventh, while Seppe Smits was 12th.
