Mad Professor is famed for his collaborations with Massive Attack, Sade and Lee Perry. Here, the dubnologist and audio illusionist talks about his long and varied career in production and plays some of his favourite records.

Having met the man in his purpose-built south London studio, Red Bull Music Academy Radio can assure you that Neil Fraser, aka the Mad Professor, is one of the sanest record producers they have ever met!

In fact, the name Mad Professor was first given to Neil by friends at school in Guyana, who were amazed by the electronic experiments he carried out as a youth. Having built a radio and telephone system by the age of 10, it was no surprise then that his interest in electronics, along with a love of Motown, Philadelphia International, Treasure Isle and music of all types led Neil into the world of Music.

Dub music, which combines reggae and recording studio trickery, seemed to fit Mad Professor's musical and technical tastes perfectly and his early work remained faithful to the traditional Jamaican dub pioneered by King Tubby, Lee “Scratch” Perry and Augustus Pablo.

His Dub Me Crazy series of albums won the support of legendary BBC 1 radio presenter John Peel, who regularly aired tracks from the albums. Famed for his remix album for Massive Attack’s Protection, and his etherial refashioning of Sade Adu’s Love Is Stronger Than Pride, the Mad Professor has had a long and varied career as a producer and DJ.

Whether he is working with Reggae legends such as Lee Perry and U Roy, producing for punk bands like The Ruts or pushing his own Dub-Me Crazy collections, the Mad Professor brings a fresh angle to whatever music he is making.
