CocoRosie must have been born under a wandering star. Their walks of life have led them from the American deserts to the hip spots of Paris and Brooklyn. Listen to their extraordinary and disturbing life story and the music they've made in a Fireside Chat.

Bianca "Coco" and Sierra "Rosie" Casady are sisters born to a Native American mother and an Iowa farmer, with a craving for vision quests. After their parents’ break-up, they moved towns almost every year, growing up in Hawaii, California, New Mexico, and Arizona whilst studying and training in various arts.

After Sierra’s stint in Paris, studying opera singing, and Bianca’s delving into visual arts and writing, the two siblings reconnected and formed the first (but certainly not last) female freak folk duo, CocoRosie.

Children's rhymes from hell, katzenjammer-sessions on their often home-made instruments, classically trained opera singing and stumbling hip-hop beats: the soundscapes of CocoRosie encompass an entire universe seen through the eyes of two world-weary fairies.

Their extroverted stagecraft mixed with their knack for introverted atmosphere has made them natural peers to artists like Antony and The Johnsons or Devendra Banhart, while their adventurous artistic outlook made them natural partners for theatrical productions (like a staging of Hamlet in Sweden), film scores (like French movie Frankie, and songs for Bruce LaBruce's Otto or Up with Dead People) as well as fashion shows.

All together this makes for a bewildering mix that, often enough, has left indie scenesters scratching their heads.

While working on their fourth album, Grey Oceans (2010), Sierra found time to talk to Red Bull Music Academy Radio. Listen to a Fireside Chat about her love for classical music, their newest drumset and a childhood with very little music at all:
