- About
- The Festival de Cannes, better known to most of us as the Cannes Film Festival, was founded in 1946. It is one of the oldest and certainly most prestigious film festivals in the world, but more importantly is the single largest showcase of cinematic art, anywhere on the planet. In 2010 the event marks its 63rd celebration of film as it takes place from the 12th to 23rd May at the Palais des Festival et des Congrès, Cannes, France. Unlike the Oscars anyone can submit a film, and every submission has the chance to be viewed by representatives of the international movie industry. It's an artistic no-holds-barred event which has launched the film careers of famous directors such as Quentin Tarantino and Steven Soderbergh, entertaining everything from black-tie celebrity screenings to midnight movies on the beach. Each year a Jury is selected along with a President, and this year's President is set to be Golden Globe nominated American film director and producer, Tim Burton. Famous for cinematic blockbusters such as Batman, Sleepy Hollow and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, many argue Burton's best work are his more quirky and dark numbers such as Edward Scissor Hands and Beetlejuice.
