- The O'Neill Coldwater Classic Series reaches the midway stage when it arrives in Cape Town, South Africa. Last year was the first time in 25 years that a surfing event was held in the Cape Town area. The Series boasts that it visits The Most Northern, The Most Southern, The Wildest, The Coldest and the Most Classic waves on the planet, and with one of the most memorable storms of the last quarter of a century also blowing in during last year's final, it's clear to see why South Africa is The Wildest. Organisers of the Cold Water Classic event, to be staged on the South Peninsula beaches, have ensured that it will have minimal impact on the environmentally sensitive coastline, while simultaneously benefiting the local economy. In order to achieve this they have implemented a comprehensive environmental management plan to reduce impact on the beaches, as well as hiring all labour, equipment and services locally to directly boost the economy of the area. It's hoped that this contest will go on to become one of the icon events on the annual international surfing calendar and a cornerstone of the O’Neill Cold Water Classic Series.
