Almeria hosted the 2009 finale of the Extreme Sailing Series, a roaring success with over 75,000 spectators in attendance. It was a fitting end to a great Series that saw 48 of the world's best sailors compete in 108 races, across six European venues, with only two capsizes, but six collisions, and this year promises to be even better!
Races are an intense, wet affair with the sailors shouting at each other to try and use the racing rules to outwit their opponents. If any skipper thinks another boat has infringed one of the rules they can wave a red flag and shout “protest!”. Umpires on the water decide if any boats have committed a foul and can give penalties (the boat has to complete a full 360-degree turn). If there is a really bad foul the umpires can show a black flag resulting in instant disqualification. First past the post in their Extreme 40 sailing boat is the winner. The final race of each event scores double points which always sets up a grand finale and the team with the highest number of points across all six regattas will be the winner of the Extreme Sailing 2010 Series.
The origins of the Extreme 40 are the Olympic Class Catamaran, the Tornado. The creators took the biggest, fastest sailing boat in the Olympics, then made it twice as big and even faster. Both light for speed and acceleration potential, and stiff to withstand the huge strain on the structure, the whole boat, including sails, weighs the same as a Mini Cooper and can be assembled in just a few hours. The crafts are capable of reaching speeds of 40 knots, the equivalent of putting your head out of the window in a car when it is raining at 45mph (73kph).
The first stop of the 2010 Series is Sete, France. With its 300 days of sunshine a year, it is a city of genuine character and a strong identity. Edged with long beaches of fine sand, it is surrounded partly by the Mediterranean Sea and partly by the Etang de Thau.
