First announced in early 2007, the inaugural Abu Dhabi Grand Prix took place on November 1st, 2009, at the Yas Marina Circuit designed by Hermann Tilke. This race was Formula One's first ever day-night race, beginning locally at 17:00. Floodlights illuminated the circuit, and it was decided that they should be switched on from the very beginning, in order to insure there was a seamless transition from daylight into darkness. The first time F1 made an appearance in Abu Dhabi was during the Formula One Festival in 2007, a free event that attracted the largest gathering of current F1 cars and drivers outside of a Grand Prix. It was announced at the festival that Abu Dhabi had won the rights to host a Grand Prix from 2009 - 2016. Originally scheduled for the 15th November 2009, as the final Grand Prix in the 19 race season, the inaugural race eventually took place on November 1st. Both the French and Canadian Grand Prix were removed from the schedule and Abu Dhabi became the the last of 17 meetings. Red Bull Racing's very own Sebastian Vettel was victorious on the historic day.
The Yas Marina Circuit is located on Yas Island, a 25.5km2 landmass, off the east coast of Abu Dhabi. The 2009 Grand Prix was the first major event to take place on the circuit. It will once again mark the last race of the Formula One World Championship season in 2010.
