About
The Autodromo Jose Carlos Pace in Interlagos, Sao Paulo, is the official home of the Brazilian Grand Prix. The first Grand Prix to take place at Interlagos was in 1972, but it didn't become part of the official calendar until the following year. The race spent several years in Rio de Janeiro before Interlagos became the sole host from 1990 onwards. 2005 saw the Brazilian Grand Prix decide the World Championship for the first time in its history when Fernando Alonso was victorious. The Interlagos circuit has created some of the most exciting and memorable races in recent Formula One history, and is regarded as one of the most challenging and exciting circuits on the F1 calendar.

One of the most memorable races in recent history took place in 2003 when completely unexpectedly, Jordan's Giancarlo Fisichella recorded his first Grand Prix victory amidst chaotic circumstances. Multiple drivers spin out of the race in treacherous conditions, including reigning World Champion Michael Schumacher, ending a remarkable run of race finishes dating back to the German Grand Prix of 2001. The race was led by several high-profile drivers at various stages, including McLaren's Kimi Raikkonen and David Coulthard. A heavy accident involving Renault's Fernando blocked the circuit and brought out the red flag, and with it came confusion. Fisichella led the race, having just overtaken Raikkonen, however the Finn was declared the winner under Formula One's count back rule, which stipulates that the race result is taken from the running order two laps prior to the race being stopped. This decision was later overturned in the FIA Court of Appeal after new evidence proved that Fisichella had indeed crossed the finish line in the lead, for a second time, before Alonso's accident.
