- About
- Even without looking at the long straight leading into a tight hairpin signature, it’s clear that the Shanghai International Circuit is from the pen of Hermann Tilke. Purpose built for the Chinese F1 Grand Prix in 2004, the circuit owners recently signed an extension to their contract to host F1 GPs for the next seven years. Located about 30km outside Shanghai, the circuit is a spectacular, ultra-modern F1 track, designed to be a race circuit for the new millennium. It’s also huge, so bring your walking shoes. If you forgot to pack any, don’t worry: they make everything in China and they sell it all in Shanghai. Tilke’s other tradition of creating a circuit that nods toward local culture continues here: the track takes the shape of the Chinese symbol 'Shang' which means ‘high’. Notable races include Michael Schumacher’s last (or most recent) F1 victory in 2006, although Lewis Hamilton seems to be the man to watch; from running his tyres into the ground as a rookie in 2007 (while Kimi Raikkonen claimed Ferrari’s 200th GP win) to a commanding win in 2008 and an eyecatching drive last year when he passed a charging Sebastian Vettel in the awe-inspiring RB7.
