- The state-of-the-art Sepang International Circuit was officially opened on March 9, 1999 (having been completed in a record 14 months) in time for the first Malaysian Grand Prix. Situated 85km from Kuala Lumpur and a stone’s throw from the city’s international airport, it is perfectly placed for hosting world-class events. Designed by Hermann Tilke, the 5.543km-long track has 15 turns and 8 straights with access speeds of more than 300kph and plenty of overtaking spots while 130,000 fans can shelter under the enormous Hibiscus-shaped grandstands. Sepang has seen some memorable racing from its first GP when the disqualification of the Ferraris of Eddie Irvine and Michael Schumacher saw Mika Hakkinen take his second F1 crown – only to have to hand it back when the disqualification was overturned. As well as high humidity, heavy rain has also played a big role at Malaysian Grands Prix with the race abandoned in 2009. Kimi Raikkonen claimed his first win here (in 2003) and Giancarlo Fisichella his last (leading a Renault one-two in 2006). No driver has yet managed three wins in a row, but Sebastian Vettel is well placed to do exactly that having won in 2010 and 2011.
