The FIS Nordic World Ski Championships have been held since as far back as 1925 for. Championship events include nordic skiing's three disciplines; Cross Country Skiing, Ski Jumping, and Nordic Combined, a combination sport consisting of both Cross-Country Skiing and Ski Jumping. From 1924 to 1939, the World Championships were held every year, after World War II, they were held in even-numbered years from 1948 to 1982. Since 1985, they made the move to odd-numbered years. Oslo 2011 is the 48th FIS Nordic World Ski Championships.
The 2011 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships will be held at Holmenkollen, Oslo between the dates of February 23rd and March 6th. There will be 21 Cross-Country, Nordic Combined and Ski Jumping events, as well as a number of cultural and festival events. Holmenkollen’s brand new National Arena will host the events, the state-of-the-art new centre which consists of three seperate entities Holmenkollen hill, the Midtstuen hill, and the cross-country stadium will break itself in in true style with over 300,000 spectators and several hundred million TV viewers taking in the action. And with around 650 competitors from over 60 nations, the action will be plentiful. The goal of this year's event is to create the best ever world championship on skis. It will be a sporting and cultural festival that will involve the whole country and hopefully leave a lasting impression. In the new National Arena the competitors will perform in optimum sporting conditions, in what is the world's most moder ski arena.
