- About
- The Red Bull Flugtag is gearing up for another flying visit to sunny Israel, and bringing with it all the creativity and madness that have made it such a hit the world over. Flugtag was the brainchild of Red Bull owner Dietrich Mateschitz, the name is German and means 'flight day'. The first ever competition took place in Vienna, Austria in 1991 and was such a success that it is now held annually in over 35 cities across the world. Anyone is eligible to compete, but in order to participate each team must submit an application and their contraption must meet the criteria laid out by Red Bull. Every flying machine must have a maximum wingspan of 30ft, a maximum weight, including pilot, of 450lbs and be powered by muscle, gravity or imagination. Regardless of how good (or bad) the designs are, ultimately they will all end up in the water, and for that reason all designs must be unsinkable and be built entirely from environmentally friendly materials without any loose parts. Entrants are judged in three categories; distance, creativity and showmanship, each flying machine is launched off the edge of a 30ft platform and the record for the longest ever flight is 195ft (59.4m), set in 2000 at the Flugtag Austria event.
