The Cyprus Rally dates back to 1970. Back then, it was a long, rough, tough and ultimately destructive event, with unattainable average speeds and controls placed to extract maximum time penalties. However, it was efficiently organised and overseas visitors enjoyed the warm hospitality and genuine friendliness of the event. Marcus Gronholm famously won the 2002 Cyprus Rally, amid lashing April rainstorms, without winning a single stage! The very next year the Rally was moved back to June and sunnier climes.
This year for the second time in succession, Cyprus features as the final stop of the IRC Series. Distinguishable by having the lowest average speed of any event on the IRC, thanks to some tight and twisty stages, it is nevertheless a demanding ordeal. It is also one of just two IRC events in 2011 that will feature both asphalt and gravel.
