Silverstone has long been the home of British Motorsport, and back in 1977 when MotoGP started in the UK, it hosted the event for an entire decade. For the following 23 years Donington had the honour of playing host, until 2009, when, in light of a proposed Donington Formula 1 deal, MotoGP administrators agreed a 10 years deal with Silverstone. Donington's F1 bid subsequently failed and its future now looks uncertain, on the flip side however this is great news for Silverstone. In 2011, for the first time in almost a quarter of a century MotoGP returned to the historic course, and to make it that little bit extra special, Silverstone Circuits Ltd unveiled an all-new section of track which elevated it to the fastest on the MotoGP calendar. His Royal Highness the Duke of York formally cut the ribbon and opened the major new portion of raceway, which represents only the first stage of what is to be a multimillion pound revamp of the venue.
Now further down the road to greatness, 2012 will see the race begin from its brand new pit and paddock complex, while things may have been tough only a short while ago, the future now certainly looks bright for Silverstone.
