NASCAR returns to the Monster Mile for the third race in the 2011 Chase For The Sprint Cup Championship. Anyone who has visited Dover knows that a race weekend is about so much more than just the racing, they'll be spoiled rotten with great food, entertainment and the most passionate fans on the circuit. Available all weekend will be free interactive displays in the FanZone, as well as Sprint Experience displays with race simulators and even the NASCAR Sprint Cup championship trophy itself.
Dover International Speedway is a 1m (1.6km) track located in Delaware, USA and is known fondly as 'The Monster Mile'. Owing to the fact that it is exactly one mile in length means that technically speaking it is neither a superspeedway nor a short track. The surface is concrete, one of only three concrete ovals currently used in NASCAR's major series. In May 2006 plans were announced for a 'Monster Makeover', a multi-year capital improvement project that will continue to bring new amenities to the 135,000 seat facility. Among the new additions to the speedway was a 46ft tall, larger-than-life monument to its signature icon, 'Miles The Monster.'
Originally known as "The Chase for the Championship" during its creation, and then "The Chase for the Nextel Cup" (from 2004 to 2007) it is the championship system used in NASCAR's top division, the Sprint Cup Series. The Chase was first announced on January 21, 2004, and first used during the 2004 Nextel Cup season. The format used from 2004 to 2006 was modified slightly for the 2007 season. The 10-race Chase pits the 12 drivers with the highest points from the Sprint Cup season against each other. The driver with the most points after the final 10 races is declared the champion.
