Today, Phoenix International Raceway has a tradition that is unmatched in the world of racing and when NASCAR come to town it is always one of, if not the, biggest events in the entire state.
In 1964, when Phoenix International Raceway was carved out of the foothills of the Estrella Mountains, it was intended to be a new jewel in the crown of American open-wheel racing. Drivers like Mario Andretti, A.J. Foyt, Parnelli Jones and the Unsers soon came to love the 1-mile paved oval with the unique bend in the backstretch. And they really loved coming to Phoenix, where the tourism industry was just starting to grow and its Western style hospitality was second to none. But it wasn't until 1988, when NASCAR's Cup Series racing came to PIR, that auto racing in Phoenix really became a major sporting attraction for the Valley of the Sun.
Originally known as "The Chase for the Championship" during its creation, and then "The Chase for the Nextel Cup" (from 2004 to 2007) it is the championship system used in NASCAR's top division, the Sprint Cup Series. The Chase was first announced on January 21, 2004, and first used during the 2004 Nextel Cup season. The format used from 2004 to 2006 was modified slightly for the 2007 season. The 10-race Chase pits the 12 drivers with the highest points from the Sprint Cup season against each other. The driver with the most points after the final 10 races is declared the champion.
