Michigan is now one of the fastest tracks in NASCAR due to its wide, sweeping corners and long straightaways, typical qualifying speeds are in excess of 190mph (310 kph) and corner entry speeds are anywhere from 205-215mph (320 kph).
The track first opened in 1968 with a total capacity of 25,000 seats. In 1972 it was purchased for an estimated $2m and has been upgraded several times since, the seating capacity now sits at 125,000. There have been some notable accidents through the years, including August 1992 when Clifford Allison, son of retired NASCAR driver Bobby Allison, died during a practice-run for the Nascar Busch Series race..
It hosts two races in this year's Sprint Cup on both the 19th June and 21st August.
