Red Bull Salzburg have reached the last 32 of the UEFA Europa League for the second time in three seasons, and will face Ukrainians Metalist Kharkiv.
Qualification went down to the wire, with Salzburg pipping French giants Paris Saint-Germain on away goals scored in their head-to-heads, meaning they finished second in Group F with 10 points from their six matches. With eight teams dropping from the UEFA Champions League group stages to the Europa League’s round of 32, the Austrian side have managed to avoid drawing some international superstars such as champions Porto, Manchester Utd and Manchester City, the latter of whom Salzburg met last year, before City had hit the big-time. Metalist, winners of Group G, swept aside the Red Bulls' domestic Bundesliga rivals Austria Vienna in the group phase, and progression for the winners will set up a tie with either Rubin Kazan of Russia, or Greek side Olympiakos in the last 16.
Red Bull Salzburg begin the next stage of their campaign at home, with the first leg taking place at the Red Bull Arena on February 16, 2012. The away leg follows a week later in Ukraine and both games will be broadcast live on TV.
