Metalist, winners of Group G, swept aside the Red Bulls' domestic Bundesliga rivals Austria Vienna in the group phase, and progression for the winners will set up a tie with either Rubin Kazan of Russia, or Greek side Olympiakos in the last 16.

Red Bull Salzburg begin the next stage of their campaign at home, with the first leg taking place at the Red Bull Arena on February 16, 2012. The away leg follows a week later in Ukraine and both games will be broadcast live on TV.
