It’s taken 11 long years but, finally, on September 17 2011, the world’s undisputed number one freestyle motocross (FMX) competition will converge on Australian turf and Aussie air space for the climax of the World Tour.
It’s the sixth and final stop in the series that will see globe-trotting Aussie Robbie Maddison contest the coveted event on Cockatoo Island in Sydney Harbour.
But the world record-holder for the longest jump on two-wheels won’t be short of competition. The planet’s top freestyle motocross riders, including world champion and current Tour leader Nate Adams, will be making the journey Down Under to contest the Red Bull X-Fighters crown.
For one day only, Cockatoo Island’s gritty industrial spaces will be taken over by the gravity-defying dirt bike devils, scaling heights of 15-metres in search of that elusive no-handed backflip, with Sydney Harbour as the backdrop.
Recently added to the World Heritage List, Cockatoo Island is Sydney’s largest island, located 15 minutes by ferry from Circular Quay.
Unique remnants of the island’s history scatter its 18 hectares. These include solitary prison cells, hand-carved grain silos, a military guardhouse and convict workshops. The island was also an industrial school, a reformatory and one of Australia's biggest shipyards.
