Rallye Monte Carlo celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2011, but hasn’t appeared on the World Championship roster since 2008 when Sebastien Loeb secured his fifth victory on the demanding asphalt rally. 2012 however, sees it make its long overdue return to the world stage on 17th-22nd January. Excitement for this event has been growing since the FIA's World Motor Sport Council met in Singapore back in September and announced the return of the legendary Rallye Monte-Carlo, for its 80th time. Thirteen rounds of the competition were confirmed and in addition to Monte Carlo gaining a slot, Italy were also delighted to receive a date.
There was however, sadly no room for Abu Dhabi this year, despite having been included on the provisional schedule, subject to the 'approval of the event business plan and format'. They haven't been permanently ruled out though, and have been invited to submit applications in the future. Britain's slot on the other hand, which was also subject to the approval of an event business plan and format a few months ago, is now permanent. But it does find itself with a switch in date from the traditional season closer, to a less illustrious date in September, a position it last held back in 2005.
