The 2005 champion was rewarded for his high profile in the Mercedes team with a full-time McLaren-Mercedes F1 testing role in 2006, but the arrival of Lewis Hamilton on the scene in 2007 put the kybosh on any hopes of an F1 drive with the team at the time, and so Englishman Paffett returned to DTM, again in a Mercedes, though an earlier-spec car. After two seasons in the relative doldrums, Paffett was right back in the mix last year with second place behind Scheider, after four wins, including the last two of the season. And he’s got his F1 test role with McLaren back. Nice work.
