About Austrian Biathlon Team

The Austrian team has been on a roll for several seasons; led by the always quotable Christoph Sumann, the big talent Dominik Landertinger, rapid-firing Simon Eder and Daniel Mesotitsch. The veteran Sumann has had the time of his life these past two seasons, in which he was battling for the Overall World Cup title, finishing a close second last year to Emil Hegle Svendsen, and winning individual and relay medals in both Pyeongchang and Vancouver. Dominik Landertinger already won a World title in Korea while still a junior. He finished sixth in the Overall standings last year, just ahead of teammate Simon Eder, who checked in at eighth. Eder, who can be uncannily fast and accurate on the shooting range at times came home with a 4th place “chocolate” medal behind Sumann’s Silver in the Olympic pursuit, but got latched onto a Silver with his teammates in the relay.

Rounding out the top four men is Daniel Mesotitsch, who has been a teammate of Christoph Sumann for the past twenty years! He has won twice in his career - in the Olympic years of 2002 and 2010, both times in Antholz. However, he quietly had a great Vancouver Games with 9th in the 20K and 5th in the mass start and a solid second leg on the Silver medal relay effort. Fritz Pinter and Tobias Eberhard completed the World Cup team in the 2011 winter season.
