Carlos Nogales Escalantes, best known as ‘Coco’, was born in Aguascalientes, Mexico, but since his first year of life until he turned 11 he lived in Mexico City with his family. At this age he moved to Puerto Escondido, a small town located in the coasts of Oaxaca. Coco confesses that at first he was afraid of the ocean, but one day he decided to confront that fear. “It became a real challenge for me because all my friends spent all day in the water… That was when the waves and I became friends”, says Coco.

When he was 17, Surfer Magazine put him on the spotlight for the first time; he surfed tremendous waves and he was the only Mexican who dared to confront them. After that, Coco decided that surfing would became his life. His specialty is Tow In surf, that means he is one of the few athletes in the world who can surf waves taller than 30 ft.

Most time of the year he is in Puerto Escondido, and everytime the weather is benevolent he does not hesitate to dare every wave he can.

From Tahiti to Indonesia, he loves to surf every type of wave: from the small and perfect ones to those big and dangerous. Five years ago he abandoned the competition scene (there are very few swell competitions) and since then he has spent his life looking after big and perfect waves.

His short and medium term plans are surfing in Canarias, France, Norway (this particular spot represents a huge challenge because of the cold temperatures). Todos los Santos is another step Coco is willing to take (one of the most dangerous waves in the world).
