Born in Rosenheim, Germany Martin started racing karts at the age of 11. He enjoyed a successful start to life in motor racing, winning the German Kart Slalom Championship in 1994, German Pop Junior Kart Team Championship in 1996 and the South Bavarian Pop Kart Championship in 1997. In 1998 Martin graduated to the ADAC Formula Junior Cup where he finished second. A year later he won the Portuguese BMW Formula ADAC Championship and came fourth in the BMW Formula ADAC Championship.

After a 12th-place finish in his first and only season in the German Formula 3 Championship, Martin accepted an offer from the Audi Abt Sportsline team in DTM in 2001. The 2010 season will be his 10th in the series, and the driver has represented Audi in all of them. To date his best finish in the championship is third in 2007, when he was also the year he became ADAC Motor Sportsman of the Year.
