Steven LoBue narrowly missed out on a place with the US Olympic diving team in 2004 but now hopes to prove he has what it takes to be one of the best – not from 10 metres but 27!
Steven's physique makes him a natural gymnast and big things are expected of the 26-year-old. “I think over the next year I’ll be able to accomplish things that I don’t think anybody else is capable of. I know this is a huge goal I am shooting towards and it takes time to get there but I really think I have the right body type and the ability to do these things."
The 5ft 4in athlete took his place in 2011 after emerging victorious from the first ever World Series qualification event held on the Hawkesbury River in Australia's New South Wales. After failing to hit a quad half the previous day, he regrouped impressively, nailing the dive when it mattered most on the day of competition to secure the last place up for grabs.
Having made a big impression in his debut season in the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series in 2011 – the highlight of his first year was a fifth-placed finish in his home event in Boston – Steven got another shot at the elite after coming through qualifying for the second successive year in 2012. Finishing the eight-dive competition in third place overall, he earned another shot at the most prestigious of all cliff diving competitions.
