About Yevgeniy
Yevgeniy began doing track-and-field athletics aged 10, and, as a keen runner and jumper, he was soon taken on by coach Sergey Gripich to develop him into a pole-vaulter.
While still a kid, Yevgeniy was jumping heights of 4–5m. Not surprisingly, Russia had made him an official Master of Sport by the time he’d entered adulthood, and a World Indoor Championship gold followed, as did a silver in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, where only an Olympic record from Australian Steve Hooker denied him gold.
Naturally, he takes his training seriously, working on his technique and fitness five days a week. He is widely tipped to emulate his Ukrainian predecessor Sergey Bubka, and perhaps even surpass his 6.14m world record one day.
