- About this Video
- Red Bull Upstream is all about wakeboarding against the stream. The world premiere of Red Bull Upstream took place in 2008 in Ljubljana, Slovenia, and was repeated twice. The time has come to find a new, unusual and less accessible location. The right people for this were Robi Pokovec, who won Red Bull Upstream in 2011, and the Austrian, Dominik Hernler, who placed second at the same competition. The athletes visited Blejski Vintgar gorge and the river Soca, and were captivated by its beauty. Dominik said: "If you wakeboard against the stream, you feel like you’re going much faster, you gain speed more easily. And if you wakeboard down the stream, it is more difficult to accelerate. I feel better when wakeboarding down the stream, I’m more confident. One has to get used to wakeboarding against the stream, and then it is okay. Soca is one of the most beautiful rivers I have seen; the colours, the nature... it's amazing. There are also some hidden rocks though so it's better not to fall." Robi said: "After the first Red Bull Upstream I thought about this location and how cool it would be to wakeboard here. Today we used a new winch and we did 40 rides, which is a lot for one day. Even though the temperatures rose during the day, the temperature of the water did not surpass 10 degrees which made the wakeboarding a bit more difficult, yet still very fun. The biggest difference between Red Bull Upstream in Ljubljana and wakeboarding on the Soca river is that here the polygon is entirely natural, you cannot be completely sure what is hidden beneath the water surface and what could happen if you fall headfirst. We did not worry about that and everything went smoothly. We had so much fun."
