AKA has, over the past year, fast became the poster-boy of SA Hip-Hop. Having scooped up a mad number of awards including Best Newcomer at the 2009 Hype Awards and a nomination for a MTN SAMA 2012, and completed and released a successful debut album, "Alter Ego". He is currently riding a whirlwind of creativity, performing around the country and recording for various feature, mix-tapes and of course up-and-coming singles as well as a sophomore album.
His latest recording ventures have just gone down at the Red Bull Studio Cape Town. For AKA the three days and one night of Red Bull Studio life provided him with the opportunity to knuckle down and focus on catching up on some album and feature recordings, as well as connect with the Mother City Hip-Hop scene.
For the Studio team it was insightful to work with the emcee, who has a Kanye West-like attention to detail when it comes to his process. Sitting with pen and pad in hand while listening to the beat for well over a few hours before getting into the booth to record as much as he can to get the perfect take, is how AKA makes sure his output is always on point.
Probably the high-light of the Session was a late-night visit from one SA's brightest and tightest Kwaito artists, Professor. The Kalawa Jazmee super-star came in to listen to a track for his upcoming album that AKA is featuring on.
On Wednesday, AKA came into to finish off his two tracks and catch a flight back to Jozi to make it in time for an interview on the Verge. It was clear to see that, had he the choice, he would have probably camped out in Studio for the rest of the week and we’re sure to see him behind the Mic again.
