The 2008-09 championship season saw EC Red Bull Salzburg narrowly miss out on retaining their title. After an incredibly exciting finals series spanning seven games, they were ultimately dethroned by the KAC, but saw the number of Salzburg fans increase, owing to their fine performances. The Red Bulls have won the Austrian Championship twice in their five years in the first division, largely thanks to their famous head coach, Pierre Pagé.
